Despite being tested by a terrifying diagnosis, Helo Matzelle clung to faith

Seattle: Helo Matzelle thought her relationship with God was as good as it could get. As a busy stay-at-home mom and devoted wife, she would have described her life as beautiful. Then, one Friday afternoon in 2011, her life changed. In her new book, Halo Found Hope: A Memoir , Matzelle shares how her life went from planning ahead for the weekend to relearning basic skills after being diagnosed with a rare brain tumor. What’s most remarkable is not what she endured physically, but how she grew spiritually.

Matzelle says when she looks back, she should have paid more attention to the physical symptoms: the strange voices in her head, like she was remembering movie lines. The metallic taste in her mouth. The ringing in her ears. But those symptoms were easily chalked up to the stress of life or the effects of spending too much time in a build…

Review: The Promise of Palm Grove

"The Promise of Palm Grove" is book one of the Amish Brides of Pinecraft series. It is actually three stories in one. The focal point of the novel is Leona and her heart's desire. The second story line spotlights Beverly, owner of Orange Blossom Inn. The third highlight of the novel is, Effie Kaufmann who was diagnosed with Perthes disease at the age of ten.
At the beginning of the novel is a map of fictional Pinecraft, Florida; which is a distinguishing feature I enjoy in a book. Author Shelley Shepard Gray did a great work with the lead in into the novel. Although the setting is unusual for an Amish novel, I enjoyed picturing the scene with Spanish moss, oak trees, brilliant sunrises, gentle rains, and temperate climate. Almost Paradise!
The primary message of this endearing novel may be, `We each have to follow the Lord's will as He leads us`. I would recommend this book to reader's who enjoy books by author Beverly Le…

Review: `A Heart's Disguise`

"A Heart's Disguise" is book one in author Colleen Coble's "Journey of the Heart" series; it is also my introduction to Colleen Coble. This arrangement is a reprint of her first series, originally titled "Where Leads the Heart" and "Plains of Promise" The novel is set in the year 1865 and in the pristine land of Wabash, Indiana; as America celebrates the end of the Civil War.
Sarah, the predominant character, was eleven when her mother died. Her fiancee is reported to have died fighting in the war, and now her father is dying. Her father wants to see Sarah marry before he dies.
In some ways the novel was raw as it expounded upon the disheartening effects of the war, yet comforting as it articulated the use of scripture among men in battle.
I was entertained as I read this brief somewhat frightening book. I presume the overall message to be "What are you willing to do for the one you love?&q…
